The Mog Log Extra: Unboxing the Final Fantasy XIV collector's editions

Filed under: Fantasy, Video, Culture, Launches, Opinion, Consoles, Final Fantasy XIV, The Mog Log
I barely ever buy the collector's edition of any game. That's not to say I don't like the idea, but it's hard to justify the increased cost for the same game, especially when the included bonuses aren't all that good in the first place (I don't know who decided that collector boxes should come with statues that add $ 100 onto the box price, but I don't like that person).

It's official: I survived SOE Live! (I'd have included "with my sanity intact," but we all know I didn't have any going into it.) It's not that I seriously doubted this conclusion; I did successfully survive my inaugural visit after all. But with so much to see and hear and do, there was bound to be a casualty of some sort. In our last installment looking at PLATO, the educational computer network that linked a thousand terminals across the US together, I don't think I stressed enough how awesome this system was for the time. In the 1970s, most universities had computers that required punch cards for input and spat back results on printers, grade schools simply didn't have computers, and if you wanted a PC at home, you'd have to build one fro

Fighting on the grid

The advantage of a pen & paper roleplaying game over a computer roleplaying game is that in a computer game only those things are possible that have been foreseen and programmed in, while in the pen & paper the players can try anything they can imagine, as long as the DM can come up with a reasonable response. Some people believe that this totally free system should also apply to combat. But playing combat in "the theater of the mind" has certain drawbacks, as every player at the table

Keyboard Turning

So here we are on Friday the end of the week and the day of the week where I hand the post away to one of the readers. If you don't know it is pretty simple. Email me a post about any topic gaming related. It can have something to do with me or it might not. Could be a story or a rant and just send it my way via email. If you don't know where the email link is it is the top right or if you are blind. Gaussafication@gmail.com Now that that is out of the way. This week I had a submission

Take a tour of Final Fantasy XIV's monsters

Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Video, Previews, News Items, Consoles, Final Fantasy XIV
It's no secret that Final Fantasy XIV will host quite a number of monsters. Some of those are already familiar to players from both the beta weekends and from the original game, but there are a lot of monsters even after you count those. The team behind the game has put together a new trailer showing off the various monsters and humanoid enemies that players will encounter on the fields of Eorzea.

Card Hunter beta key promotion

A lot of readers of my blog already play or are interested in Card Hunter. So when Blue Manchu gave 3 beta keys to every player and I posted about giving away mine, I received not only lots of interest for those keys, but also lots of beta key donations from other readers. I ended up handing out around 30 keys, and still had more interest in them. So on the suggestion of a reader I contacted Blue Manchu directly and asked for more beta keys. And they gracefully sent me a batch of 30 beta keys!

SWTOR 2.3: BioWare shows off palette upgrade

The latest Star Wars: The Old Republic dev blog is something tech geeks and film nerds may find interesting. BioWare's dev team has added color grading technology to the SWTOR game engine, providing its environmental artists with more direct control over how textures appear in-game.

Here's the basic gist: The team takes a few screenshots of the area in question, and then edits them with photo editing software. The changes m

So how's everybody been? You all doing well? Because I'm super, and thanks for asking.

For some reason, July was one of the first months since its announcement that seemed to be fairly quiet for Infinite Crisis; I can only guess that most of the staff was too busy playing to make announcements, which would be the ideal situation. But the other superheroic games on the market certainly didn't quiet down, with Marve

There is no such thing as a sandbox game

Over the last years various MMORPG bloggers have used the terms "sandbox" and "theme-park" to describe games with less or more directions given to the player on what to do. The same concept in earlier years used to be called "world" versus "game" MMORPGs. There are people who would like to live in a virtual world, and there are people who want to play a game. Both are okay, and any given MMORPG to some extent allows both, but there are clearly games that go more in one direction or more in the
