4.3 So Far

As many of you know 4.3 was launched yesterday, and if you didn't know then I really have no idea what to say in response to that. So with the launch let me go over a few things that I have noticed and I think are worth mention.LFRI haven't tried it, but I have there is a problem with invited Real ID friends from cross server to form a group. This to me should be an important part of the system and I have heard at the moment this is working as intended. Also there has been mention that double to

SWTOR combat styles

While a few people have actually tried to play through a MMORPG without killing anything, for the majority of players a lot of the time taken up by these games is in combat. Thus whether you like a particular class' combat style is an important factor in choosing which class to play. Before I played the SWTOR beta weekend, I had planned to play a Jedi Consular as healer on release. But having played all 4 main classes now, I changed my mind. The Jedi Consular, and his alter ego the Sith Inquisito

Epic can't be repeated

If you were tasked to represent the gameplay of a MMORPG as some sort of flow diagram, you would probably find it useful to think of it as having basic repeating units, like combat. These can be stacked inside of each other, so that you have repeating daily quests or dungeons which each have repeating combats. These repeating units are held together by the unique parts, the non-repeating stuff: Unique zones, quests, and stories. While two zones or quests might resemble each other, they aren't id

Eternal Blade (KR) - Debut trailer

I am guessing gPotato is more well-known in the West as a MMO publisher, but not many knows that its parent company, Gala-Net, actually has development studios (Gala-Lab) in Japan and Korea. 2 of the more famous games include Fly For Fun (Flyff) and Rappelz.

Coming up next will be Eternal Blade, which was hiding at the Business to Business (B2B) area over at G*Star 2011 I believe. There is not much info I can dig up about this, but enjoy the debut trailer~!

Official Raid Finder Q&A

The Raid Finder is one of the highlight features of patch 4.3, but not all players have been entirely clear on its function. What raids can you run? How often can you run them? Who can you run them with? In a World of Warcraft as complex and tiered as the one we have today, these are all valid questions.

The World of Warcraft community team has come through for us with a full Raid Finder Q&A, detailing both the present and future states of the feature. The RealID functionality in particu

Star Wars : The Old Republic - My personal opinions

So, having played just a little while over the weekend, I decided to post a few thoughts about what I feel with regards to Star Wars: The Old Republic. As you can see, the game is not using any of the 2 branded graphics engine, Unreal 3 or Cry3, hence the texture of objects and environments seem kind of low-res when zoomed in. While people will say we don't really zoom in all the time while playing, unfortunately, we do get much headshots during the quest conversations, exposing things such as

Ardwulf is writing about what MMORPGs could learn from Skyrim. One quote caught my eye: "A decent crafting system would be a good start. One of the more popular starting areas is a forest, for example – what if there was a lumberjacking harvesting ability and a tradeskill you could use lumber for, and you made trees – every tree, mind you – interactable? Well, obviously a lot of areas would be promptly deforested!" If you compare that with reality, you'll quickly observe that it took human

But I do have doubts whether accurate financial forecasts can be achieved by asking a few hundred gamers. The first problem with asking gamers for financial forecasts is that you can't get a representative sample.

Nevertheless, Lune of Eden will be an action online title, with the sort of fast and furious combat found in most console games. Watch out for it come 2012. World of Warcraft god mode

Imagine World of Warcraft had a god mode, like Skyrim does. What would that mean for the game?My previous post about Skyrim was too long to get my point across, so this is the short version: I think that many of the freedoms you have in Skyrim, if transplanted to a game like World of Warcraft, would destroy WoW as a game. We do not want a MMORPG in which you can exploit terrain, can cast spells for zero mana, or can turn on god mode. Why do we want these features in Skyrim?Tobold's MMORPG Blog

Happy Tuesday morning, everyone. The biggest news we're likely to see in a while, is, of course, not coming this week. Patch 4.3 will remain on the test servers for at least one more week, as Nov. 29 marks the projected end of the latest PvP season.

That said, there's plenty of new to be had this week, from Black Friday sales to more ways to earn conquest points. We have the usual roundup after the break -- but hey, if reading bulleted lists isn't your thing (or even if it is), why not try i

Skyrim - Gameplay

Skyrim is a strange beast when you consider its gameplay. You get a large amount of freedom, much more than you would get in most single-player or massively multiplayer online role-playing games. And I believe that it is this freedom of action which is mainly responsible for the ultra-high review scores and general excitation about this game. We got so used to being constantly guided and our hands held through all sorts of games that the freedom of Skyrim is refreshing. And for all the excitatio

The problem is not to look at any specific game and decide whether I would consider it to be an MMORPG or not. The problem is to imagine how much the existing games could change, and still be an MMORPG. I was pondering that question after reading not one but several bloggers writing about playing both Skyrim and the Star Wa

WoW Moviewatch: Wowcrendor's Compilation of Amazing

Can you believe that Wowcrendor has been on YouTube for nearly three years? In that time, he's earned nearly 65,000 subscribers and created almost 200 videos. That's one heck of a track record, no matter how you measure it.

In all this time, Wowcrendor has never put together his own compilation or retrospective video. Since that kind of thing is mandatory, he created Wowcrendor's Compilation of Amazing. This video is nearly 8 minutes of clips, gags, and funny voices from man behind Billy. If

Beta isn't what it used to be

I am not in the Star Wars: The Old Republic beta. But I did get a mail telling me to not get a beta code from sites like IGN, because I would get into the beta at the same time as the people who got a beta key from those sites anyway. And now Bioware revealed that everybody who signed up for the beta before 11/11/11 would get in, which is millions and millions of people.Gazimoff from Mana Obscura writes about how beta testing has changed, moving away from bug reports and using heat maps and data

The Borg are taking advantage of all the new releases happening on Tribble, and a distracted player base, to launch a full scale invasion of the planet Defera! Both Starfleet and the Klingon Defense Force have responded by sending officers to the planet in an attempt to prev

Is it time to kill the global cooldown?

OK, so I was playing some Diablo III beta last night. Since this is a site that covers World of Warcraft, I'll just say that the little snippet I managed to play through before passing out was such that I could describe it in superlatives. But one of the things I noticed when playing was that the barbarian class plays absolutely perfectly to me. There are attacks that gain you the resource (fury) that you then spend on larger, more punishing attacks. You can spam those fury-gathering attacks;

There are indications that this is already happening. The world's biggest dopamine pusher, Zynga, is facing decreasing profits. Their $ 306 million of quarterly earnings are close to what Blizzard makes with World of Warcraft, but their profits are down to a measly $ 12.5 million,

Playing for fun versus advancement

One of the things that makes you want to always fight one more battle in World of Tanks is the advancement of your tanks and tech tree. The experience points you gain in each battle allow you to research better equipment for your tanks, or unlock tanks from a higher tier. But recently I noticed something unusual about my behavior in WoT: I stopped caring about advancement. I'm at tier 7 out of 8 in artillery, 8 out of 9 in both medium tanks and tank destroyers, and 9 out of 10 in heavy tanks. Bu

I did my homework and watched gameplay videos of Skyrim in both 1st person and 3rd person mode. That control scheme leads to more camera movements overall, because you can't click on let's say the chest on the ground without looking down. And in the previous games that excessive camera movement did cause me video game nausea, making them unplayable for me.So,
