The question most often asked by a DM in Dungeons & Dragons is: "What do you do?". But sometimes you get a convoluted answer about some very complex action a player wants to try which makes no sense to you at all. And then it is better to ask: "What do you intend to achieve with that?". KOG buys out Elsword publisher for overseas expansion
Initially a joint venture between Brazil-based Level Up! Games and Korean MMO developer/ publisher KOG started in 2010, the company known as KOG-LU USA is now solely owned by KOG. This happened after KOG announced its purchase of Level Up!’s share of the company, signalling the Korean firm’s plans to solidify its North American expansion plans. NCsoft founder explains Nexon investment greenlight
At a recent senior management summit, NCsoft’s founder and CEO Mr Taek Jin Kim (pictured) revealed some reasons why he decided to sell 14.7% of the company’s shares to his biggest competitor, Nexon. When watching other people DM games of Dungeons & Dragons on video, like Rhykker of Dungeons & Drogans, or Chris Perkins on YouTube, I can't help but notice that these DM do something I don't: Voice acting. They make NPCs come alive by speaking in different voices, or with funny accents. And I'm wondering how important that is for a role-playing game.

I am subscribed to a print magazine with PC games reviews, and that magazine took the unusual step to post a correction to their review score of Diablo III, downgrading it by 5 points. From July 25-29 Rift is offering free unrestricted access to the game for any former subscribers who have a character at least level 20. I am working on a conversion of a classic Dungeons & Dragons adventure module to today's 4th edition D&D. And that conversion process really makes some of the changes from previous editions to 4th edition very clear, with the key factor being the number of combat encounters in the adventure. The Firefall beta process is still going strong, and the developers are working hard to optimize the game and make it as fun as possible. I just had a short look at Zynga's latest Facebook game: The Ville. It is an utter and complete rip-off of EA's The Sims Social. Even the user interface looks like a Sims game. Now Zynga got away in the past with ripping off small indie game companies. But that was because Zynga was the big guys with the big lawyers. This week Blizzard unveiled the new recruit-a-friend reward mount for World of Warcraft, the Obsidian Nightwing.
One little side note: You don’t summon and mount this mount. Instead you TURN INTO a winged panther which your friend can then hitch a ride on.
The X-53 Touring Rocket which was the previous recruit-a-friend reward mount has now been retired, but those players who already have it will of course still be able to use it.

I'm not a huge fan of the action hack'n'slash genre, but I do play games like Diablo from time to time. This year's Diablo III was a disappointment, even many people who liked it at first ended up complaining about the grind in the endgame later. So I was interested when a reader wrote me about Path of Exile having solved the endgame problems of the genre: Instead of running through the same story again and again, Path of Exile has a system which allows you to craft instance maps.

Squadflow (KR) - Too fast, too furious
First announced way back around 2010, Hanbitsoft's futuristic online shooter, Squadflow, will finally be entering its official Closed Beta phase soon. But before that, a playable demo session was held at the company's headquarters, showcasing the enhanced fast speed combat. I think I may be getting old, but battle looks really fast @_@ 2 maps are the standard team demolition, while the other is a CS-inspired plant da bomb. Mabinogi Heroes (KR) - Vella teaser trailer
Revealed just yesterday (link), the teaser trailer for Mabinogi Heroes' latest character, Vella, is now out! Alo known as Vindictus in the Western market, Vella is the 6th character in the game and is scheduled to hit the Korean server on 2nd August. A duel sword wielder, she is supposedly similar to Lann, but with abilities to parry and reflect damage while being more agile in avoiding attacks as well.

Let's jump straight into the game's introduction. Daybreak is a new action MMORPG developed in China, with the game design (to me) a mixture of Rusty Hearts, Dragon Nest with a hint of Dungeon Fighters Online. That is not really a bad thing, since there aren't enough action MMORPGs out there. Despite being from China, Daybreak is not a total clone of any 1 game, which I feel is a massive improvement. Even before hitting the 6 month mark, the CJ Games is forced to begin a "Ascend Comeback Project" to seek quitters to join back the game.Here is how the campaign goes. [More info] It has been months and months since we last heard anything about Perfect World's Swordsman Online. And I would have expected the game to launch this year given the English trailer was first teased at E3 2010! Dragon Nest (KR) - Legal case continues
[Source] According to the latest reports, Korean studio Blueside is NOT backing out from pursuing further legal actions against Dragon Nest developer, Eyedentity Games. Some of you may have heard about or even played the original games in the Langrisser franchise, hence this online version will be no doubt an exciting title to look forward to. MapleStory (JP) - 2 new classes teased
I must say, the sudden influx of exclusive classes to regional servers is a surprise move to me. With the American server getting Jett (link), the China and Taiwan servers getting the Dragon Warrior (link), how can Nexon Japan miss out on the fun? While the 2 classes above use the Pirate + Pistol motif, the new classes here are taking an alternate route. Currently known as the Samurai and Shrine Maiden, more news will be available come 5th July as part of the summer update.

It seems like Nexon has too much cash to splash around, from being fined heavily after its account security lapses in Korea (link) to investing in closet rival NCsoft (link). Lord of the Rings Online Devs Talk Mounted Combat in Riders of Rohan Expansion
Admittedly this video is pretty much two guys sitting in front of a camera talking about mounted combat, and only a few seconds of any kind of in-game footage is shown, but there is some discussion here about how different aspects of mounted combat are being worked out including healing from a horse.
