Grimlands - The "real" shooter MMORPG ?

[Game website] Well, those are not my words, but Gamigo is apparently touting Grimlands as the "real" shooter MMORPG in its latest gameplay video. Note that it is "shooter MMORPG", not "online shooter"... Oh well. As revealed at gamescom 2011 last year, Grimlands' setting takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, with what seems to be mutated humans and zombies roaming the wild.

From what I know, there are not many online games out there with similar settings making a big impact out in the ind

Sazh Story

Yesterday we had the first Downloading part to add to the FFXIII-2 story. If you were hoping when you first heard about it that it would add to the main storyline and make a better ending, you will be disappointed. This is a side story, which happens parallel to the Main Storyline. It has to do with what the heck Sazh was doing the whole time.I won't spoil the story itself, but just tell you what it adds. How long is normal for playing a MMORPG?

Keen, who has a reputation for going through hype and disappointment cycles faster than the rest of us, is writing about hype and disappointment cycles. He says "I’m worried about those who DON’T follow the pattern at this point. They are the weird ones." And to some extent I agree. Anybody who starts a new MMORPG these days with the idea to play it nearly every day for the next 5 to 10 years is either deluding himself, or seriously weird. F2: Floating Fortress (KR) - Closed Beta 1 delayed

[More info] Much hyped in the Korean media as the successor and sequel for FlyFF, gPotato (or Gaa Net) has decided to postpone the 6-days Closed Beta 1 phase till next month, March 2012. A specific date was not given, although the publisher/ developer said it was to include more game content. Apparently the big bosses over there felt the game is indeed lacking in content even for a Closed Beta. Let's hope the game will be even more polished once the public can get to play it.

The Favorites of Selune campaign - Level 0

My D&D group last night finished their first adventure, the level 0 introduction to the game I prepared. The idea was to play some D&D 4th edition with characters that were not fully formed, so as to give the players a better idea about game mechanics, helping them choose their level 1 powers and skills. The adventure took one-and-a-half game sessions, with the other half of last night being spent “leveling up” to level 1. This post is a journal of this first adventure. If the adventure appe

Site-based vs. event-based adventures

Instead of playing games I now spend a good part of my weekends creating them. Or rather creating encounters, adventures, and a campaign for my Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition players. Of course it is a lot easier to create adventures for 6 players than for hundreds of thousands or even millions. But some basic principles remain the same, whatever the number of players, and whether you are creating encounters for a pen & paper game or for a MMORPG.One principal problem is how the players find the

Gevlon started playing EVE, promptly got ganked, and is loving it. Now here is a good fit between the character of a game and the character of the player. I do think Gevlon will do very well in EVE. I wonder if he'll still be reporting so honestly once he makes a REAL mistake in this game, like trusting the wrong people. Or when he will get stuck and unable to progress because he trusts no-one

As I mentioned yesterday, the core rule books of Dungeons & Dragons are the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual. Nice for poor students, but not really a recipe for a huge financial success of the game company. TSR was nearly broke in 1997 when they got bought by Wizards of the Coast. Would it be wiser to keep up your standard of living using borrowed money, or to reduce your spending to adjust it to your reduced income? Imagine your neighbor lost his job, should you be forced to give him money so that he can keep up his standard of living? To most people the answers to these questions are very obvious: If you earn less, you should spend less. And you shouldn't be forced to pay for somebody else spending more than

Thought the number of new characters are not released as fast as Lost Saga and League of Legends, Rusty Hearts Korea is now into its 8th character already. Introducing the first kid to grace the action online game, this is Layla from the vampire clan. According to foreign articles, she will be quite similar to Franz, but is apparently strong and faster compared to her older clansmen. Not much news about Layla is available at this moment. The modularity of Dungeons & Dragons 4E

I've had some recommendations for adventures from readers, by comment or by mail, and have been busy looking through them. The good news is that there are adventures out there with better stories and less dungeon. The bad news is that generally around 90% of the encounters are combat encounters, even in the good adventures. I would prefer my campaign to be less combat heavy, having about a 50:50 mix of combat encounters and non-combat encounters (like roleplaying encounters or skill challenges).

For all of you that didn't know WoW Insider does a piece each day call Around Azeroth. Where they take screenshots and show off the locals, which exist in and around Azeroth. I always find it interesting to see what others have scene and found throughout the world. Today though this was their screenshotNow this isn't the turtle mount, but it still bugs me. I just find it amusing that I now have a hatred for turtles because of something I haven't been able to get in WoW. Is this weird? Even if it

One thing to think about when writing and running adventures for pen & paper roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons 4E is what you hand out for rewards. Different DMs have different approaches here, with an optimum that probably is somewhere in the middle, but the extremes both existing. So in one campaign your DM might only give you non-magic loot, with an epic dragon maybe having a +1 sword. And in another campaign every goblin is equipped with magic weapons and armor, and the backpacks of

I've been reading through the first stand-alone D&D 4E adventure released by WotC and frankly, it sucks. There is one village, two non-combat encounters, and 24 battles. Most of them lined up one after the other in a dungeon. 1985 just called, they want their Temple of Elemental Evil back. Will Blizzard keep you from getting rich in Diablo 3?

Diablo 3 is going to have an auction house in which players can sell virtual items to other players for real money. Which prompted some people to start dreaming of getting rich by playing video games. I've been chronicling the negative consequences of that for some time, from the difficulty of getting rich in face of strong competition, to the expected negative social consequences. But it seems I have neglected one aspect: Blizzard might actively stop you from getting rich. My favorite virtual s

How it went

MMORPGs are fun. Even if we sometimes complain about this or that, overall we end up spending hundreds or even thousands of hours with these games, which we presumably wouldn't do if there wasn't any fun to be had. But just like any relationship, there are some compromises that have to be made. MMORPGs have their limitations as well as their strong suits. Lots of object or NPCs in any virtual world can't be interacted with at all, others follow relatively simple scripts that make their actions q
