The best of WoW Insider: December 2011

Bearheals: (on archaeology) The smallest distance between two points is a bunch of erratic zigzags.

After patch 4.3 went live in late November, class columnists and commenters busied themselves with the new 5-mans and Dragon Soul raid. I think it's safe to say that Raid Finder problems have dominated December commentary. Players loved it as a feature, but they hated the various cheats that guilds used to get themselves to a four-piece tier bonus as quickly as possible, and they especial

The End Is Near

So many of you may remember awhile back I did a post about a particular plant that seemed to be just a little too happy. That seemed to sing and smile too much for my liking. A pet that was so happy and so nice that it made you believe that one night you would wake up with a knife to your throat with its giant eyes looking right into yours. Many of you said I was crazy. Some of you agreed with me and my craziness. Today though our fears have come to the forefront. I give you this! That'

The Raid Finder, the Dungeon Finder, point caps and you

I have a theory that either our various caps for justice and valor points are too low, or the amount we get per activity is too high. I'll relate my thinking. I have several level 85 characters I'm running through the Dungeon Finder and Raid Finder tools. Clearing both halves of the Raid Finder Dragon Soul gets me 500 valor; I then run four random heroics, and I'm capped. This means that playing my main any further that week is effectively a waste of time. (I usually cap my valors out before

Noobs Of The Year 2011

Well it Friday, but not just any Friday it is the last Friday of the year. Oh yes that is right. Normally on Friday's it is the Reader Post and today is no different except that the topic this week is the Noobs of the Year. Something which has been done every year. As mentioned in my previous posts (link), this game has nothing to do with the Japanese anime of the same name, but players can only assume female characters, no males are allowed!

The game will be re-named when it hit overseas market, so this title is possibly only for Korea.

I'm 80 hours into Star Wars: The Old Republic, level 30, and I'm still loving it. One can probably level a lot faster than I did, but I'm not at all in a hurry, and rather spend time trying out different features like crafting and space combat instead to rushing to the level cap. I also want to do *all* the quests, and some planets like Taris really have a lot of those. In any case one is forced to see all the major places, as the class quest is strictly linear. Win 7 Internet Security 2012

What sounds like an antivirus program is in reality a disguised malware program, and it took over my laptop yesterday. My wife had received a fishy looking e-mail from her sister, consisting of only a link to a file on the site of Star Computer Services, Canada. I didn't click on that link, but googled the site instead, which resulted in a legit looking link to that domain name. So I followed that Google link, and was infected by that virus within seconds. What was so scary about that is that I

Rumor - TERA Korea claims another executive ?

Remember the time when one of TERA's development leads left the project not long after the game launched? Another high profile executive is set to leave the company, according to foreign reports. Other sources point to him leaving to begin his own company as the interim position is restricting his progre

A totally subjective opinion on SWTOR

Today Star Wars: The Old Republic launches. My character is level 20 after a week of low-intensity playing, in which I had a lot of fun. If you haven't bought the game yet, I can heartily recommend SWTOR for its excellent story-telling, polish, and leveling game.I do not, however, have much faith in the endgame. The strength of SWTOR is clearly the way the stories are told, the cut-scenes, the voice-acting, the decisions you can make in conversations. All of this is content which is great once,

SW:TORs Biggest Flaw

He's not fat, he's just big boned
I’ve been playing SW:TOR since Tuesday and, whilst I have been enjoying it quite a lot, a number of big game design flaws have cropped up already, most of which I think will start to grate on people pretty quickly. The biggest flaw, in my book anyway, is the now very apparent terrible distribution of classes amongst the playerbase. Simply put, everyone is playing the same darn class (Advanced or otherwise)… and I don’t just mean by a sm

Addon Spotlight: Loot addons 2

Each week, WoW Insider's Mathew McCurley brings you a fresh look at reader-submitted UIs as well as Addon Spotlight, which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond -- your addons folder will never be the same.

There's a whole lotta loot going around these days, if you haven't noticed. New loot, loot that looks like tentacles, armor pieces, armor set pieces, transmogrification gear, upgrade gear,

SWTOR day 2

Day 2 of the Star Wars: The Old Republic progressed smoothly, with my trooper reaching level 11, leaving the starting planet, and becoming a commando (healer with big guns). Our guild formed too, although that turned up the first noticeable bug in SWTOR: The guild window is somewhat erratic and doesn't always show all guild members. We also had a minor accident with capitalization of words in our guild name, and couldn't get hold of a GM to fix that. I guess they have more important things to do

Are common quality items rare to find?

Common may not be quite so common anymore. While working on an article about a legendary quest chain, I recalled the days of class quests -- specifically, the days of Molten Core and The Eye of Divinity, along with the Ancient Petrified Leaf that started the class quests for epic weapons. Epic anything was rare to see in the early days of vanilla, and even when Molten Core first came out, it was rare to see people decked out in purple gear. But these days, it seems everyone is wearing epics

Aion Enters F2P in EU

If you play Aion on one of NCSoft’s European servers, mark your calendar. Come February 2012, Aion will join the free-to-play field. Joining forces with Gameforge, a German-based publisher, NCSoft will open up the fields of Atreia, which, by their own admission, has been pretty anemic of late when it comes to players:
In the last few months the lands in Atreia have become more and more deserted. We want to reinvigorate the world of Aion and attract new adventurers to the towns to take to t

We need new categories

Is Star Wars: The Old Republic more like World of Warcraft, or is it more like Skyrim? For many people the answer to this question is simple, because we tend to think in categories of theme park games versus sandbox games. SWTOR like WoW is definitively theme park, Skyrim is far more sandbox. But having played a lot of Skyrim between the SWTOR beta weekend and the early access, I couldn't help but notice that the reasons why I play Skyrim and not WoW are very similar to the reasons why I play SWT

Cheating in World of Tanks

Among recent spam comments I deleted were several links that promised cheat programs for World of Tanks, like revealing all enemy tanks or aimbots. Many people believe such hacks and cheats exist, because there is a well documented history of wallhacks and aimbots for games like Counterstrike. I said WoW-Killer, not WAR-Killer!

Omali from MMO Fallout has an interesting thought about the future of Warhammer Online: Is it possible that being down to 1 server per continent means that the game is too far gone to be saved by a move to Free2Play?
