Here come the whales!

I received a closed beta key for City of Steam, in time for the beta session starting today. And while looking through their website I stumbled upon the page offering collaborator packs, selling both beta keys and various advantages like virtual currency for the final game. And what I found notable was that there were packs for up to $ 500 on offer. Even higher, the Kickstarter page for Elite: Dangerous offers advantages for backers up to $ 5,000. And the $ 5,000 pack is marked as "sold out"

Compatibility of D&D editions

Greywulf thinks the next official D&D adventure Storm over Baldur's Gate might be dual format, having stat blocks for both 4th edition and D&D Next. Personally I have my doubts, as I have in the past tried to adjust D&D adventure modules from previous editions to 4E and found that there are some compatibility problems. Would an adventure that works in 4E and Next even be possible?

My favorite explanation what the difference between D&D editions is in a question: "How many arrow

Few corpses on Facebook

I've been looking at the latest generation of Facebook games, from Zynga and others. There has been some evolution with games like Farmville 2 and Cityville 2 not just being prettier than their predecessors, but also having improvements to gameplay. What remains is the problem that these games are basically unplayable unless you create a specific Facebook account just for them and fill it with fake friends, so not much movement there.

But one thing that struck me when looking at various games

Only now they announced the game being delayed from January 2013 to May/June 2013. Games that are released where I just think "oh, I might want to play that one day" go on my wishlist instead. And when Steam does a sale, I check

Non-ownership

The Id DM has a brilliant post up about non-ownership. What I found particularly interesting there was the implied slippery slope from owning physical goods to renting virtual goods to stealing virtual goods. If "ownership increases perceived value to us", and companies insist on only renting stuff to us instead of selling it to us, we perceive the value to be lower, and thus feel less guilty if we pirate the content. We perceive stealing a physical CD as being a crime, but downloading the same

Since cancelling the supposed Closed Beta earlier this year, F2: Floating Fortress has gone pretty quiet. However, the game was spotted at G*Star 2012′s B2B hall. When questioned, staff of Gala Lab confirmed that the title is meant as a sequel to FlyFF, without giving away more information.

F2: Floating Fortress is developed as a more “hardcore” online title than FlyFF, with PvP and PK as the main theme. Currently, each guild has a maximum of 400 members, with relic

[G*Star 2012] Asta: The War of Tears and Winds – New game footage

As 1 of the “Big 4″ at this year’s G*Star event, the game as been shrouded in relative mystery since no one knew how different it will be compared to last year’s demo. With much gratitude from me, Hangame release a new trailer with tons of actual in-game action. The formula for being an “Asian World of Warcraft” apparently has not changed, and various Asian cultural influences can be spotted.

Mirror War is a arcade shooter at its core, but enhanced with new twists. Rather than choosing plane models, there are currently 4 classes to choose from (each with 1 advancement), along with skill trees, a main town and of course, dungeons and maps filled with traps.

[G*Star 2012] Rohan II – Sequel to popular online game revealed

The reason I used “revealed” and not “announced” is due to the fact Rohan II was only known to visitors of YNK Interactive’s business booth, far away from the prying eyes of the general public. As of now, nothing is know about the game, other than a couple of images and the game logo. Do not expect any news soon, and I am wagering Rohan II will appear in full at G*Star 2013 next year.

[G*Star 2012] Black Desert – Preparing to launch next year

Even though PearlAbyss, developer of the upcoming Black Desert, did not have an appearance in the consumer hall, the Korean media still managed to get treated to some eye candy back in the business hall. A short interview was carried out by Inven Korea, and here is a quick summary for this awesome looking MMORPG from the folks who made Continent of the Ninth.

A co-op effort with IP owner, Warner Brothers, the game has a mix of PvE and PvP modes, although in my point of view, the PvE co-op mode will be the main star of the game. Remember little Alma? No, not for a Kickstarter project funding, even if that means we are showing our age here. We just want a rather old-fashioned input of ideas. [G*Star 2012] Mabinogi II: Arena – Camera footage from game demo

//
Taken by the Korean media, I apologize for the shaky and blur camera footage. If anything, it can be seen that Mabinogi II:Arena is certainly leaning towards more of Mabinogi Heroes than Mabinogi at this point of time with the instanced-based dungeon action combat. But still, Nexon has yet to reveal what players can do outside of combat, perhaps those features are saved for later.

He says: "Of course, I don’t have access to any of BioWare’s feedback or research, but this seems to be an awfully convenient statement to be flinging about. Convenient in that it places the blame for subscriber loss on the business model and not the product or ongoing service." Funnily I didn't read Bioware's statements like that. I mean, what did Syp expect? Bioware saying "Our game
