Legend of Wukong - A Journey back to the West
From China developer Baiyou which brought us City of Dreams, a TERA-lookalike (link), comes Legend of Wukong, its latest MMORPG title. As you can guess from the name, the storyline will revolve around the storyline of Journey to the West and its protagonist, Sun Wukong or the Monkey King.

Back in May, there was a report on Massively (link) about a 17-year gaming industry veteran, Jason Bell, heading for Globex Studios to work on the comapny's new MMORPG, Secret Kingdoms Online. How fast is your computer? Having now received my new computer, I find that this question is very hard to answer. There is no universal measure for speed of computers, you can only measure the time it takes the computer to do a specific task. So I've been running benchmark programs like 3DMark and find that my new computer has a score of just under 24,000, compared to 14,500 for the old one. [PAX 2011] Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes
(Beta signup) If you haven't heard of Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes, it was just revealed a couple of weeks back (link) and is developed by a new team over at Bioware, the creators of games such as Mass Effect and the upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic. Basically, Wrath of Heroes is a 3D action DOTA sort of game. In Warcraft III's DOTA mod, there are 2 teams against each other, but here there are 3 team against each other. Sword Girls - Dungeon preview
(Official website) Announced just last week (link), ChangYou's new online card game, Sword Girls, is back with a brief preview of the game's dungeon system. A dungeon in an online card game?! Yeap. you read it right. The dungeons, just like most MMORPG now, are classified into the Easy, Normal and Hard modes. And no, you cannot collect all the cards once you win, but you gain Ores to craft new cards. Closed Beta begins in October and below is the continuing official press release.

Hunter Blade - Monster Hunter clone goes English
(Official website) Thanks to a forum post in OnRPG (link), it seems that Hunter Blade is getting an English server, for now. I am not sure if this is a temporary server to attract business partners from the West or if the developer are serious about hosting an English server themselves, but we shall see. Developed in China by JoyChina, the game has been called a Monster Hunter clone from gamers everywhere. This English server is currently in Closed Beta.

[PAX 2011] Firefall - New trailer and event pictures

Back in February 2010 (link), I posted about Korean studio Gorilla Banana's first online game title, Red Blood Online. The developer did not actually leak out much information, but today, a new trailer was shown as the game is being prepared for the Closed Beta phase. From what I know, this should be the first Free to Play open world action MMO from Korea. Red Blood Online's storyline is based on a manga series which has been running in Korea for around 7 years.

I recently had the chance to play this new online game for a while, but I wasn't really impressed to be honest. Sandbox is hard
Again I fully agree with Syncaine in that it is a lot easier to make a successful PvE theme park game than to make a successful PvP sandbox game. The market for PvE theme park games is obviously much bigger, and even a half-decent WoW clone like Rift can get 1 million customers (if not subscribers). Having said that, I think that Syncaine is wrong in attributing the difference to PvP vs. PvE. I believe that it is easier to make ANY theme park game, PvE OR PvP, than to make any sandbox game.

Friday is the traditional day for blog wars between me and Syncaine. Unfortunately it appears we will have to cancel that, because some doppelganger ate Syncaine and replaced him with somebody I agree with. That, or the guy is getting old and reasonable. So this document was "leaked"So before people going all crazy this is the same process Blizzard went through with Cataclysm and Wrath. So this is going to be the name of the next expansion. To get the ball rolling on that Darkfall 2.0 character reset perfect harmony joint post between me and Syncaine, I thought I'd write up some thoughts on skill systems and character resets.

So anyone that I know is excited about the whole Transmogrification coming with 4.3. That is everyone besides Deathknights who for the most part think they are getting screwed over with the system. Possible Hero Classes
So I really don't think we will see Pandaren be a playable race. The reason is for this to work both sides Horde and Alliance would have to get the opportunity to play as them. This would mean creating a neutral faction something Blizzard has said in the past they don't really want to do. The other reason being not as convincing being there were new races with BC, a new class with Wrath, and new races with Cata, so logically you would say Mists of Pandaria would bring a new class.So on that

Since decades now I buy a new computer every two years. I give my wife the 2-year old PC, and throw out her 4-year old one. The 2-year cycle used to be determined by the speed of technological development, and a necessity to play the latest games. I didn't go to Gamescom this weekend. I easily could have, it's less than 2 hours away by train, and neither train tickets nor entry tickets were prohibitively priced. If you get a chance to watch the documentary The Raid, I can recommend watching it. It is not always pleasant, but realistic enough, and touches a lot of the issues and misconceptions about raiding. Apparently Games for Google+ launched last week in the USA, but isn't yet available world wide. I haven't got access to it yet, and my appeal to not get kicked out from Google+ is still pending, so I don't have first-hand experience of the Google games yet. This week I finally got access to Games for Google+, so I tried some of them to get a first impression. In particular I tried Angry Birds, City of Wonder, and Dragons of Atlantis. 3 games out of the 16 currently on offer.

Blade & Soul (KR) - Closed Beta 2 dated
This information is just in from my Korean colleague. NCsoft has announced earlier this morning that the Closed beta 2 phase for the highly-anticipated Blade & Soul will begin from 29th August till 10th September, with registration starting on 19th August. The players entering CBT2 will be announced on 26th August.

In the past weeks there have been several bits of preview information about Star Wars: The Old Republic which made me think about virtual morality. For example it was revealed that there are romance options with your NPC companions, but that pursuing these options as a jedi would yield you dark side points. Or in other words, jedi don't have sex, because sex is evil. No wonder they died out and lost the old republic to the sith, who apparently get stronger by having sex.

Crytek MMOFPS Warface also in US and Europe
Warface was previously announced by Crytek as a free-to-play online FPS only to be released in Asia. However, now it’s revealed that Warface will also be released in the rest of the world, during 2012.Warface is developed by Crytek Kiev with the help of the Seoul and Frankfurt studios and will contain some co-op missions against the AI, alongside the usual PvP modes. After 7 years of people discussing how the holy trinity of tank, healer, damage dealers is broken, after 7 years of tank shortages, after even the attempt to bribe people to tank failed, Blizzard is finally caving in. They are finally making a tank as easy to play as a damage dealer by making threat generation easier and automatic. Patch 4.2 hotfixes for August 16
Blizzard's Zarhym released a new set of hotfix notes tonight. While many of these should be live as we speak, remember that some of these fixes may require a server restart to take hold. Among some of the highlights:
Threat generation for all tanks has been increased to 500%, up from 300%. This is in line with today's Dev Watercooler.
Occu'thar has come into a larger supply of PVE gear than he previously possessed.

The Secret World To Open Beta Registrations On August 26th
Funcom and EA have announced that Funcom’s upcoming MMO will open beta registrations on August 26th. There is still no date for when the beta will launch for the supernatural MMO with a contemporary setting.

[gamescom 2011] ASTA: The War of Tears and Winds
Perhaps one of the rare few Korean online games to be showcased at gamescom 2011 in Germany, ASTA's fame is boosted by the fact that it is developed using Crytek's latest game engine, CryEngine 3. Yes, the same one which was used to develop Crysis 2. In the latest developer trailer voiced over in English, the developers over at Polygon Studios give us an insight on what to ASTA has to offer and what we can expect from the game. And don't ask me why was a male voice over used for the nice lady.
