Phantasy Star Online 2 (JP) - Server closure announced

After going into Open Beta in Japan on 21st June less than a week ago, developer and publisher SEGA has announced Phantasy Star Online 2 will be closing due to server instability which remained unsolved after several smaller maintenance. This is mainly caused by the number of players streaming into game, despite having 10 servers available for this phase. All servers will be down for 1 day, 28th June, for a major maintenance and server upgrades.

Funcom to Develop New LEGO MMO

Funcom announced yesterday that they have signed a deal with the LEGO Group to develop an MMO based on the LEGO Minifigures franchise.
This is a fairly quick move from LEGO back into the MMO market after the short existence of LEGO Universe Online, which saw less than stellar subscriber numbers, leading them to attempt a half-hearted venture into free-to-play before the game finally went offline in January.
Funcom made a point of stating that the emphasis for the two new partners was to make sur

D&D Next modularity

In yesterday's post Anjin put a link to the latest D&D Next developer's blog entry in the comments. It talks about modularity and combat subsystems. The goal appears to be to provide options for different playstyles. Specifically mentioned are "narrative combat", with guidelines of what bonuses and penalties to apply to dice rolls when a player wants to roleplay stunt moves in combat, and rules for tactical miniature combat. So what can we learn from this post?

The action economy of D&D Next

Another post in the D&D Next developer's blog is about the action economy, that is the rules that govern how much stuff you can do in a turn. In 4th edition you can do one standard action, one movement action, and one minor action during your turn, as well as an unlimited number of immediate interrupts and immediate reactions. In D&D Next you can do one action and one movement during your turn, and one reaction between turns. I really like the latter part; I might use it as a house rule

A minor comment about SWTOR math

There has been a discussion whether SWTOR has shrunk by 90%, based on the number of servers designated as source for free server transfers. I believe that number is misleading. The number of servers you need depends on the maximum number of concurrent users, which is *not* the same as the number of subscribers. Even if no subscriber left the game, the number of concurrent users would drop a few weeks after release.Tobold's Blog

The Favorites of Selune campaign - Level 2 - Session 4

In the previous session we saw our heroes get further involved in the rebellion to free the Barony of Harkenwold from the evil mercenaries of the Iron Circle. Having successfully ambushed a supply wagon in that session, this session began with them bringing the wagon to Albridge, the center of the rebellion. Although the rebel leader Dar Gremath had said that his plan was to provoke the Iron Circle into an open attack on Albridge, the group had doubts about the soundness of that plan. While the

While Microprose's other 4X games like Civilization or Master of Orion had many sequels and remakes, fans have been waiting for a remake of Master of Magic for nearly two decades. Gimmicky Features, Promises And The Things That Really Matter In MMOs

Class stereotypes in this image? Don't be ridiculous.
Watching the latest video from Carbine Studios about Wildestar (see below) made me realise two things: one, Jeremy Gaffney sounds eerily like Alan Alda from M*A*S*H and two, developers really like to sell us gimmicky features with the claim that they’ll radically change our MMO experience, rendering everything that came before shallow and obsolete. Whether it’s mechanics like ‘battlefield control’ in Wildstar or th

And to an extent which I don't remember happening when 2nd or 3rd edition was released, the release of 4th edition caused something generally known as the "edition wars". People claimed their favorite edition of D&D to be the "true Dungeons & Dragons", and better than whatever edition others preferred.

Why different audiences see the Diablo 3 AH in a different light

Different people want different things from their games. For online roleplaying games there have been quite a lot of attempts to classify the different groups, from Bartle's Players who suit MUDs to the endless "hardcore vs. casual" discussions on blogs. The overall effect is that the same feature which might appear great to one group of players can appear very bad to another group. And the Diablo 3 auction house certainly is such a feature.

Character death is a tricky issue in any roleplaying game: On the one side players can feel an immense sense of loss if they really lose a character they got attached to; on the other side having death become too trivial leads to all danger being perceived as trivial as well. In a pen & paper roleplaying game the likelihood of a player death will vary a lot between different groups. It is up to the Dungeon Master of a D&D game to get the balance right. Sexual harassment in the world of video games is bad

Just a very short comment on an ongoing heated debate, in which I think an important point has been forgotten: Yes, sexual harassment in the world of video games is bad. But please let us not forget that non-sexual harassment in the world of video games is as bad. We would be very badly served if we made a huge effort to only eliminate the sexual kind, and permit the non-sexual harassment to continue.Tobold's Blog

An alternative explanation of D&D Next

Critical Hits has a very interesting post on D&D Next. It states that human minds tend to fill gaps in what they see, so we filled the gaps in the "pre-alpha" version of D&D Next, and thought we knew how D&D Next would work. But it is possible that these gaps aren't there by design, that D&D Next is not in fact designed to rely on the Dungeon Master making up the rules on the spot; the gaps might simply be areas which haven't been filled in yet. The final version of D&D Next

MechWarrior Online - Razer controller revealed

[Concept website] While SteelSeries is busy manufacturing PC peripherals for games such as Diablo III and the upcoming Guild Wars 2, Razer has not exactly slack off as well. With the Star Wars: The Old Republic craze now gone like the wind, the company has revealed its latest MMO tie-in, this time with MechWarriors Online. A customized controller, it seems like the perfect peripheral to control those hulking mechas.

SteelSeries - Peripheral for Guild Wars 2 & Dota 2

Not sure why, but it seems the SteelSeries brand has been getting deals with the more popular games, in my opinion, to produce official peripheral for them. After Diablo III, SteelSeries is now launching hardware for both Guild Wars 2 (link) and Dota 2 (link). A pity the Guild Wars 2 mouse is mainly coated in white, as I am sure the area will get stained in no time.

In another non-MMO tie-up, SteelSeries has also revealed the peripheral lineup for Valve's upcoming reboot of a classic fr

What a Long Strange Trip It's Been: Wilderness Tips for World of Warcraft

While other Massive Multi-Player Online Role-Playing Games might have come before it, World of Warcraft is acknowledged as the leader in the field, with a membership of over 11 million people. In its lush forests, soaring, dragon-haunted mountains and mystery-shrouded deserts, you will run into people from all walks of life - there is no particular kind of person who plays an MMO. But very little has been written a

Warface - New trailer shows possible publisher

[Closed Beta signup] While having a new trailer for this CryEngine 3-developed MMOFPS is not that a surprise, but the latest trailer showed a certain company's addition into the beginning credits. That company will be Trion Worlds (of RIFT fame). I have no idea how Trion will fit into the whole picture, but I am guessing as the publisher for the North American region.

DestinyQuest: The Legion of Shadow

Fantasy roleplaying games are full of heroes overcoming challenges, frequently in the form of monsters, but also challenges of exploration, story decisions, or obstacles. Thus somebody has to "play" the monsters or challenges, and tell the story. In a pen & paper game that will be the Dungeon Master (DM), while in a computer game the computer will take over that role. But back in 1982 very few people had computers, and you couldn't always have your friends around to play pen & paper gam

Can anybody explain to me the point of SOEmote?

So SOE developed a new technology called SOEmote. It captures your facial expression via your webcam, and transposes it onto the face of your Everquest II character. A technological miracle! But what exactly is the point of that? I don't know how at what zoom level you tend to play your MMORPGs, but I have never ever played so far zoomed in that I could actually see facial expressions of avatars. In fact my guild in World of Warcraft had instructions on our website explaining how you could get

The dangers of artistic vision

The layoffs at 38 Studios and EA Bioware reminded us that game companies are not charities with a goal to promote a specific artistic vision of games. Game companies need to make money to pay their employees, to keep their current games running, and to develop the next ones. Making a product that not enough people buy can sink the company. The game industry has had more than their fair share of failed development studios with more enthusiasm than economic sense, making basically the game t

Indeed, if it had been announced two months ago, I don’t think any of us would be having any doubt that it’s just an April Fool’s joke gone awry on the part of SOE. Using quests to direct flow in 4E

Although any origin of "innovation" in MMORPGs is disputed, I believe that it is since World of Warcraft that many MMORPGs use quests to direct the flow of their game, for example to make players explore all corners of a zone, or to get them to the next zone, or even to make them follow the "main" story. This is a very useful trick, which can also be used to great effect for pen & paper roleplaying games. Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition was the first time the word "quest" actually appear
